TERESE J. MASON PIERRE is a Canadian writer and editor. She holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Bioethics from the University of Toronto and is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy at York University. In fall 2018, she will commence a Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph. Terese has blogged for NOW HEAR THIS, a Toronto-based literacy program established by the Descant Arts and Letters Foundations, writing about topics such as influences and styles of bestselling authors and the writer’s life. She has also worked with award-winning author Emily Pohl-Weary at Toronto's Koffler Gallery, in piloting a youth writing workshop. Terese is passionate about creative writing, music, mentorship and volunteering (see below for affiliations). She lives in Toronto with her family and cat, Benjamin.
Terese is the poetry editor of Augur Magazine, a speculative literature magazine based in Toronto, and an associate editor of Lady Lazarus Journal, an online magazine of experimental poetry. She also curates and edits fiction and poetry submissions for the Toronto Public Library’s Young Voices Magazine. With her mother, a longtime teacher, Terese does freelance editing and proofreading.
Terese began volunteering with Hart House during her undergraduate career at the University of Toronto. Terese is the Chair of the Hart House Singers, a non-audition choir at Hart House; her role encompasses budget-making, liaising with Hart House staff, administration and marketing.
Terese is currently a nonvoting member of the Hart House Library and Literary Committee, which aims to inform and encourage students to pursue the literary arts. In this capacity, Terese has planned events for creative and professional development; she has previously facilitated the Writers’ Co-op, a writing workshop for students. Terese is a member of the Hart House Senior Members Committee, which brings together alumni and students of the University of Toronto for special events.
Toronto Public Library
Terese has volunteered with the Toronto Public Library (TPL) since 2009. She began as a Leading to Reading mentor, assisting children on reading, writing, comprehension and other literacy skills; she ended this in 2014. Since 2013, Terese has been a member of the TPL’s Editorial Youth Advisory Group (EYAG), where she curates and edits fiction and poetry submissions for the Young Voices Magazine. Through the EYAG, Terese also reviews YA novels and interviews authors for the Teen Blog, and advises TPL staff on youth outreach endeavors. Currently, Terese is an assistant producer of the Young Voices podcast.
